WTN: Rosemount Balmoral Syrah 1998

by Bruce Hayes » Fri Feb 23, 2007 10:20 am

McLaren Vale.

Decanted about 30 minutes before dinner.

Still quite dark in the glass at nine years of age.

Spicy, floral, cedar and black cherry fruit on the nose.

Inky, tarry, black cherry, raspberry, chocolate, lightly creamy, a leaner structure than I had been anticipating.

Drying, moderately tannic finish.

Very good but not worth what I paid for it, which was, I believe, around $50 (Canadian).

Thanks for the notes! This is the wine (another vintage, of course) I tried last summer where the distributer had mis-priced it drasticaly-so the wine department manager sold it for $22!

I have had it . Based on my recall of this wine and 98 was a great vintage , I would not be surprised if this wine still has some evolution to go.
Cheers

Could well be right David...but look how the price has risen! No longer on my must-buy list.

Yep, it's like anything else, the longer you hang around the more ridiculous prices seem to be...of course the alternative isn't very attractive! I remember when Beringer Knights Valley was one of my house wines at 8.99 to 9.99 a bottle.
Anyway, I have 2 bottles of '93 Balmoral that kind of got forgotten in my cellar. I guess they should be about completely ready, wonder if they are over the hill? Tom V
