WTN: Cote Bonneville tasting

by Jenise » Wed Jan 05, 2022 9:27 pm

Went to a fun tasting dinner a few weeks ago showcasing the wines of Cote Bonneville. The Yakima vineyard (some would argue that the appellation is Rattlesnake Hills, not Yakima) has excellent fruit that's highly sought after; they keep 25% of what they grow for their own label. I haven't run into their wines much in the wild, and it's likely due to the fact that they're priced at the upper end of tolerance for most Washington wine lovers while perhaps not having yet solidly established themselves vintage after vintage with high scores from the usual suspects that makes one 'collectible'. These are definitely not Parkerized wines.

2007 and 2011 Côte Bonneville DuBrul Vineyard Yakima Valley Red Bordeaux Blend
Poured side by side, each shows the extremes of their respective vintages. The 07 riper with strong black cherry notes on the nose and luxe-textured midpalate fruit, but higher-than-average alcohol puts a bitter bite in the finish. When I asked the winemaker to name the percent abv, she obfuscated by claiming not to remember. Still, this has the stuffing to cellar for another 5-6 more years--no rush. The '11 the opposite, tighter with good cool climate herbal details on the mid-palate and finish ('11 was the most difficult vintage of the last two decades), but it lacks stuffing and probably did more to sell the '07 to a largely neophyte crowd than it sold itself. IMHO neither justified $120/bottle. I'd love to taste this wine from a better vintage.

2016 Côte Bonneville Cabernet Sauvignon Train Station DuBrul Vineyard Yakima Valley
Tastes younger than it is. Bright and vivid with good varietal typicity and balance. Made to be this winery's "affordable" red ($35ish), and it fits the bill perfectly.

2013 Côte Bonneville Syrah DuBrul Vineyard Yakima Valley
A rather bright and feminine syrah (no rocks, no funk) that's all about the berries with bits of bark and spice. Has enough acidity and tannins to hold thru 2023-2025. Liked it a lot, purchased a few bottles.

2012 Côte Bonneville Carriage House DuBrul Vineyard Yakima Valley Red Bordeaux Blend
Bottle-aged soft tones of the CS/Mer/CF blend with an initial ink note that evolves into a distinct cab franc character. Doesn't show the merlot or CS but does have balanced acidity and tannins. Further aging not needed but this could hold here for 3-6 more years and one would hope for more secondary development.

2016 Côte Bonneville Chardonnay DuBrul Vineyard Yakima Valley
Unfined, unfiltered. Flinty opening that suggests white burgundy intentions followed by ripe WA apple chardonnay character enhanced by bottle age. Enjoyed it, but it's at the end of its runway and more expensive ($60ish) than I would consider for same. I did order a few '17s though (untasted).

David, they make one of the best rieslings in this state. Unfortunately, they didn't bring any to this tasting.
