A Mosel and Poire Willhem!

2010 Karlsmuhle Kaseler Nies`chen Riesling Spatlese, Mosel.

SC, $30 Cda, 7.5% alc. AP#13.11.

Partner fancied some Chinese takeout so I opened this treat, bottle 2/3.
Clear light gold, active nose with lime, lemon, just some slight effervescence on opening. Very good match with the food, some sweetness naturally but very good acidity. "Apple and peach, some petrol" from across the table. Noted a hint of honey as we were about to drain the bottle.
Good length and drinking quite nicely. Finished off with some stollen and eau de vie but more about that later. Poire Willhem...Etter Zuger Kirsch Eau-de Vie Suisse.

Good Poire Williams from Alsace is just about my favourite dry white fruit brandy, especially from Nusbaumer. I'm curious to know how the Swiss version performs. There is a lot of common culture, gastronomy and even dialect between these neighbouring parts of France (Alsace), Germany (Black Forest) and Switzerland (Basel region) and this extends to the production and love of these dry fruit brandies.

Agreed. I often prefer the nose on a Framboise, but the palate tends to have more depth with Poire Williams.

I don't think I've ever had a Poire Williams. Booze Group got together last night for Cognacs and we discussed what to do next time (we're running out of ideas). 'Other fruit' brandies might be an interesting idea!

Post-dinner with the in-laws in Germany we always look to the liquor cabinet, and Nusbaumer is a favorite. Last night we had two versions of Nusbaumer Framboise, one 'Sauvage' (at 40%) and one 'regular' (at 45%). Much clearer fruit on the Sauvage version, but both had such seductive aromas that one could get lost nosing the glass.

That said, a German Pear Williams from Brennerei Ziegler was the star of the show. Such deep flavors with lovely layers, for a white fruit brandy. A German Sour Cherry was also in the mix, but mostly undistinguished.

That Pear Williams sounds well worth seeking out. Brennerei Ziegler is located along the Main well upstream from Frankfurt. That is outside the Alsace, Black Forest, Basel heartland for white fruit brandy.

I misspoke. Just looked at the bottles and realized last night the Birnenbrand was from Weingut Diehl, outside Stuttgart. So many good options!
