1997 Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru Les Murgers, Alain Hudelot-Noellat
Instantly recognizable as an older wine by the light brick-red color. It has very welcoming and abundant aromas of complex, fully mature pinot noir fruit--classic Nuits-St.-Georges. The aromas don't quite follow through to the flavor, though. There is lively, complex wild cherry and strawberry flavor there, but it doesn't live up to the intensity of the aroma and it's backed by a lot of acidity. It goes very well with food, but not so well on its own. I think this one is past its peak and drying out--there's no point in holding onto it any longer. Still, 24 years is a good run for a wine from a vintage not known for its longevity. Curly double Moe.
