WT2N: Tablas, Yet Again

by Pat G » Sat Nov 13, 2021 3:46 pm

Tablas Creek Viognier, 2018, Paso Robles, Adelaida District

Aromas remind me of a good fruit cocktail, evolving and mixing to create complexity. Lime, apricot, apple, bits of guava & papaya. Subtle stoniness, white flowers. Definite honey, a bit of biscuit/brioche. Medium body, medium legs. Medium + finish, medium - acidity. A balanced, interesting effort. As with many TC wines, not cheap. But well done. May be at or near peak.

This was a wine we purchased in 2019 after a seated tasting at the winery. Bought 2, one as a gift. Even though it's November and time to shift more to reds, this wine hit the spot. Enjoyed for 2 nights originally, then again a few days later. Still going strong, lasting power. I pour it about a half hour before serving since stored in refrigerator. Screwcap.

Sounds like it may not be quite up to the 'dead old lady' aromas I associate with and dislike about most warm-climate viogniers. TC has such a deft touch with whites.

Nope, DEAD. Or at least, very close to it. Lavender talcum powder, cheap dime store perfume, old robe, kleenex stuffed up the sleeves--it's all in there. That's viognier.
