WTN: Evaporation wine - Ludes Thörnicher Ritsch Riesling

by Rahsaan » Fri Nov 12, 2021 4:33 pm

One of my favorite wine merchants has been boosting Ludes for a while and I'm just now getting around to drinking. I started with 2020 Hermann Ludes Thörnicher Ritsch Riesling Spätlese and my first thought is what took me so long. This bottle evaporated.

Pale fresh herbal lemon lime flavors but with nice juicy (old-fashioned) spätlese generosity in the midpalate. Enough weight to have definite palate presence, but still crisp, crunchy, racy and fine, with a whiff of savory smoke to balance everything. Perfect with a roasted chestnut omelette, potatoes, and sauteed kale and cauliflower.

The bottle evaporated in the blink of an eye, so I'm happy to have more.

I have had a couple of Ludes wines (Lyle Fass brings them in), and they are quite good. A 2015 Auslese was begging for time.

Yes, I've seen Lyle selling some of the older wines.

From everything I've heard, the style is not the flashiest. So I can see how drinking them older would be a good idea. Perhaps I got lucky with timing, but this was a perfect moment for this one.

Just had another bottle and this is so freaking good. Such great flavors, texture, balance and energy. Just ordered more, along with some of 3 other 2020 cuvees.
