by TomHill » Sun Nov 07, 2021 5:52 pm

We tried these last night at Steve's:
1. Heinrich Mayr Nusserhof Bl.te.le VinoBianco (100% Blatterle; 11.5%; LouisDresner; http://www.fws.it/en/nusserhof/) H.Mayr/Bozen/AltoAdige NV (L2019): Light gold color; very fragrant/perfumed slight herbal/muscat-like bit perfumed talc/stony/mineral very exotic nose; fairly tart very perfumed floral/gardenias/herbal/almost muscatty rather rich/lush very exotic beautiful flavor; very long/lingering very strong floral/gardenias/bit herbal/almost muscat-like bit stony/perfumed talc/minaral complex very exotic finish; a very exotic white wine. $29.50 (KK)

2. Marotti Campi Orgiolo LaCrima di Morro d'Albs Superiore (13.5%) 2013: Very dark color; beautiful black cherry/licorice/boysenberry very perfumed light earthy/mushroomy light pencilly/oak lovely nose; lightly tart/tangy very rich boysenberry/black cherry/licorice light earthy/truffly/almost ContraCostaCnty-like light pencilly/oak some complex flavor w/ light tangy tannins; very long/lingering ripe/boysenberry/black cherry/licorice bit earthy/mushroomy fairly structured finish w/ light tannins; a pretty classic expression of LaCrima and a good example of what makes this grape so good.

3. Giulia Negri DOCG: Barolo LaTartufaia (14%; http://www.GiuliaNegri.com) Serradenari/LaMorra 2016: Med.light color; very fragrant Nebb/lilacs/violets/floral very light tarry/pungent quite attractive nose; fairly tart/tangy rather floral/Nebb/lilacs/rose petal light tarry/pungent rather drinkable flavor w/ light grippy tannins; very long strong floral/Nebb/violets/lilacs light pungent/tarry finish w/ light tannins; a pretty drinkable example of Nebb but not a particularly distinguished of Barolo w/o the depth one would expect; more akin to a Langhe Nebb.

4. Matela Teroldego LeBonClimatVnyd SantaBarbaraCnty (13.5%) BevelaWines/SantaMaria 2011: Very dark color; beautiful fragrant Tero/black cherry/blackberry strong toasty/oak very Calif lovely nose; lightly tart very strong boysenberry/blackberry/classic Tero strong toasty/oak bit complex flavor w/ some rough tannins; very long/lingering fruit-driven/blackberry/black cherry/Tero strong toasty/oak bit complex finish w/ some rough tannins; plenty of Tero fruit & can still use a few yrs of age.

5. Foradori Granato Teroldego IGT: Vigneti delle Dolomiti (13%; Louis/Dressner; http://www.AgricolaForadori.com; U) Mezzolombardo 2017: Very dark color; rather toasty/oak some Teroldego/black cherry/blackberry/boysenberry/ripe some earthy/dusty slight graphite/pungent bit complex nose; very strong Tero/black cherry/blackberry/boysenberry rather toasty/oak some earthy/dusty bit hard some complex flavor w/ ample hard tannins; very long bit hard/tannic strong black cherry/blackberry/boysenberry/Tero rather toasty/oak quite structured some complex finish w/ ample tannins; badly needs 5-10 yrs of age.

6. Conti Sertoli Salis Canna Dd'OCG: Sforzato di Valtellina (15.5%; TellitaliaImprts/Telluride) 2009: Dark color; intense Nebb/very ripe/licorice/boysenberry/Amarone-like some alcoholic/fumey rather aromatic nose; bit soft off-dry very ripe/blackberry/boysenberry/licorice slight earthy bit hot/alcoholic flavor w/ ample hard tannins; very long/lingering very ripe/blackberry/boysenberry/licorice somewhat soft rather Amarone-like/very ripe/some alcoholic finish w/ ample chewey tannins; not showing much evolution; lots of overripe character & may never outlive the tannins; the Sforzato process pretty much sublimates the beauty of the Nebb grape. $70.00 (DiVino)

A wee BloodyPulpit:
1. Blatterle: This is a near-extinct grape variety indigeneous to the Sudtirol. It is mostly used for blending & Mayr is the only apparent producer as a varietal. There label does not spell out Blatterle because the grape is not a recognized/authorized variety in the Sudtirol. The wine has a very exotic aromatic character that suggests a muscat character.

2. Matela: JimClendenen was the first to grow Teroldego in Calif. Around 2010, turned over his Teroldego to his niece, Kris Beverly and Marisa Clendenen Matela. This wine is aging at a pretty slow pace & can still use more age.
________________
3. Foradori: She is easily the master of this grape variety. The Granato is Elisabetta's top-of-the-line Teroldego. It's a wine that ages very well as a rule. A bit on the expensive side, I tend to prefer her regular Teroldego because of the lower level of oaking it shows. But no doubt she's the best when it comes to Teroldego.

Did you get the Foradori as a sample? (Maybe they're all samples.) I know you revere that producer and would not otherwise be likely to open one so young.
My wine shopping and I have never had a problem. Just a perpetual race between the bankruptcy court and Hell.--Rogov

SteveCostigan was the one who bought the Foradori, on futures I believe, and wanted to try it.
