2018 Apothic Inferno California Red Blend
Manufactured flavors target sweet-toothed, alcohol-impervious neophytes looking for a cheap high. Egregiously15.9%. No I didn't buy it but it showed up at a party I went to last weekend. Just now I went to the Apothic website to see what grapes they used. They don't confess, they just brag that it's aged in charred whiskey barrels for two months following a 60 day fermentation. Woohoo, four whole months!!

I was poured this wine blind a while back. Quite possibly the most disgusting "product" I have ever tried.

Indeed. Btw, the guy who brought this passed out on the couch later. Not just because he drank this, he drank everything else too, but the fact that he's the type that happens to explains everything you need to know about who buys this crap.

And where do they get off appropriating the name of a very respectable Italian wine, Inferno (Valtellina)? Didn't they get slapped for doing exactly the same thing to Champagne, decades ago?

An individual winery would have to pursue their own action, and likely doesn't have the deep pockets to go after Apothic.

As for Champagne, Korbel still gets to use it.

I had forgotten that, David - quite right. See https://vinepair.com/wine-blog/loophole ... gne-legal/ for the explanation.

I wonder how the Californians would like the French selling a 'Napa' Cotes du Rhone made by a French winery named 'Napa'.....

The French would never stoop so low as to degrade their product with the name of "Napa." ;)

I agree, but it would be a nice tit for tat move and would make an interesting public forum case.
