1997 Galli & Broccatelli Sagrantino di Montefalco

Our local retailer picked up 20 or so cases of this with a competitor buy-out. Heavily marked down to $5.00 / bottle and sequestered on a end cap at the store along with the rest of the purchase acquisitions. I figured at these kind of prices, most of the offerings were pretty much gone.

But…maybe worth a shot. I purchased 4 of the most interesting wines..to me anyway. 3 of the 4 were…basically..sink wines. Best used for coating PVC drains. But this one is pretty good. I went back and purchased a case.

It’s a slow opener. Very tannic on first taste w/ a healthy dose of acid. There is dark fruit, meat & more tannins on the palate with medium length finish. Bloody on the initial nose that eventually opens up to grilled meat and tar underlayed w/ dusty florals. Sounds like a Barolo TN, I know, but the florals are different… But even after it opens, its still pretty tannic. Deep garnet in color with noticeable bricking on the edges. I’m thinking about decanting and letting it sit overnight.

I’m not familiar the sagrantino varietal, so I can’t really say if it will improve or whether its already on the downhill. Certainly worth drinking now though. Great with mushroom and black olives in EVOO & pasta

Thanks, Richard.

See my earlier tasting note re: Sangiovese/Merlot/Sagratino blend. I have one bottle of "overpriced" Sagratino that I am holding on to for a while yet-because of the tannins.

This is my second Sagrantino. Both have been pretty tannic, but I think I've finally come to understand, in my own twisted way, the wine adjective..."grip".

Imagine someone reaching into your mouth, grabbing your tongue and squeezing. Except in the Sagrantinos I've tried...they squeeze every drop of liquid out of it.

Richard--
From what I recall, Galli & Broccatelli isn't usually ranked in top tier of SdM producers, but their prices have always appeared more reasonable. Even so, $5 per bottle is a steal (assuming they weren't cooked or something). SdM is usually a tannic monster when young, so you may have picked these up at a perfect time. I'll be curious to hear how they progress.
