WTN: Three New Solminer Wines....(short/boring)

by TomHill » Mon Oct 25, 2021 7:15 pm

Tried these three over the last few days:
1. Solminer Riesling Dry CoquelicotVnyd/LosOlivosDist (13.9%; 98 cs; www.Solminer.com) 2020: Light gold color; rather pretty R/floral/pineapple/mango fairly lightweight bit simple pleasant nose; fairly tart/tangy rather R/floral/mango/pineapple lightly spicy rather simple pleasant flavor; med.long bright R/mango/floral/pineapple pleasant finish; like many of the Solminer whites, I would like a wine with a bit more impact & oomph; will probably put on weight over the next few yrs; an altogether pleasant R but just that. $34.00

2. Evolucio Blaufrankisch Weinland/Austria (12.5%; Botique Wine Collection/Philadelphia) 2016: Dark color; rather earthy/lamy/dusty/bit Kansas root cellar some grapey/plummy/BF rather rustic/coarse nose; soft some tangy/metallic fairly earthy/loamy rather plummy/grapey/BF rather coarse/rustic flavor w/ light coarse tannins; med.long rather earthy/loamy/dusty/root cellar rather plummy/grapey/BF finish w/ light coarse tannins; speaks strongly of plummy BF but rather on the coarse/rustic side; this is how FredFranzia would make BF in the Burgenland if he could but has more flavor than he would like. $11.00 (KK)

3. Solminer Blaufrankisch DeLandaVnyd/LosOlivosDist (11.0%; 12 brls; U/U) 2020: Med.dark color; very strong very earthy/loamy/dusty/Kansas root cellar quite plummy/BF/black cherry/boysenberry some complex bit pencilly/oak classic BF/Burgenland rather complex nose; rather tart/tangy/bit metallic slightly off-dry strong earthy/loamy/dusty strong plummy/BF/ripe/boysenberry/black cherry bit complex flavor w/ light bit tangy tannins; very longquite tart/tangy rather lean strong plummy/BF/black cherry quite earthy/loamy bit rustic finish w/ light tangy tannins; loads of BF/plummy/earthy/loamy character that belies the 11.0% alcohol; but rather lean/hard/underripe on the palate; would like a bit more richness; don't see this BF going anywhere; bit pricey at $46.00

4. Solminer St.Laurent RicciVnyd (11.1%; 210 cs) Buellton 2019: Dark color; light earthy/loamy/dusty quite fragrant/floral/plummy/StL/spicy light toasty/oak quite attractive perfumed nose; fairly tart quite floral/StL/bit Pinotish some earthy/loamy light oak light bodied bit complex flavor w/ light tangy tannins; very long some earthy/loamy/dusty rather floral/StL/Pinotish finish w/ light tangy tannins; a rather fragrant/perfumed/floral light-bodied expression o0f StL w/o a lot of depth or complexity. $38.00

A wee BloodyPulpit:
1. Blaufrankisch is a grape that originated in Austria, then when it was part of Germany. Also known as Lemberger. St.Laurent is another Austrian indigenous variety that appears to have PinotNoir as one of its parents.
The Solminer wines are made by Dave & Anna DeLaski. They both have backgrounds in Austrian winemaking. I generally like what they're doing & applaud their efforts, but often find I would like a little more oomph in the wines. They tend to harvest pretty early and the wines tend to be on the lightish and sometimes anemic side.
