WTN: Lo-Fi SauvBlanc/Chard '20...(short/boring)

by TomHill » Mon Oct 18, 2021 2:41 pm

Tried this natural wine over the weekend:
1. Lo-Fi SauvBlanc/Chard SantaBarbaraCnty (52% SB from CoquelicotVnyd/48% Chard from SpearVnyd; 12.5%; www.LoFi-Wines.com; 2 wks of skin-contact during fermentation; 245 cs) Buellton 2020: Deep golden/burnished bronze color w/ much cloudiness & lots of flocculant sediment; very strong phenolic/ViniMacerati/resiny somewhat funky/natty/bit mousey/hantavirus some SB/herbal/slight floral/pungent rather complex (in not a good way) nose; quite tart/tangy/quite sour strong natty/funky/hantavirus/some mousey some herbal/SB/floral flavor w/ some light tannins; very long rather natty/funky/mousey/hantavirus some VM/resiny/skin-contact very sour/hurtey slight herbal/SB finish w/ some bitey tannins; an interesting natural wine but too natty/unclean for my pleasure and so sour it hurts to drink; an intelluctual wine but certainly not a pleasurable wine; will only get more funky. $25.50 (KK)

1. This is exactly the kind of wine that gives natural wines a bad reputation. They don't have to be that way. Just had two AltoAdige natural wines that were perfectly clean & a pleasure to dring. Probably won't try Lo-Fi again until they become Hi-Fi.

"flocculent" "hantavirus"

Okay, you made me laugh. Sounds terrible and obviously it was. But I wasn't prepared to be impressed as soon as I read which grapes it was a blend of. I love both, separately, and can't imagine that even in the best of situations blending them would do anything but produce a nondescript white.

Uhhhhh...Jenise.....this wine was anything but "nondescript".
When you clear out a stack of firewood, you'll often encounter an old mouse nest, filled w/ mouse pee & poop. It has a very distinct smell to it. You had to have been there. But that is the circumstances in which you can pick up hantavirus. So "hantavirus"
is my shortcut way to describe stale mouse pee & poop, mixed w/ dead grass. A smell only SweetAlice would love.

Well I can tell that it wasn't nondescript! But I meant, take half a bottle each of normal chardonnay and sauv blanc and combine them, and I'm guessing the result isn't nearly as interesting as either on their own would have been. Would round off all the corners, as it were.
