WTN: Two Italian Whites...(short/boring)

by TomHill » Mon Oct 11, 2021 5:02 pm

Tried these two new wines w/ Susan this weekend:
1. Faraone Verdeca IGP: Vally d'Itria/Puglia (100% Verdeca; www.IPastini.It; KermitLynch/Berkeley; 12%) I Pastini 2020: Med.gold color w/ lots of tiny bubbles clinging to the side of the glass;
lightly floral/carnations/spicy light stony/chalky/flinty rather pleasant if not too distinctive nose; bit soft somewhat tangy/metallic lightly floral/carnations earthy/stony/mineral rather attractive/pretty flavor;
very long floral/carnations light stony/chalky bit rich/lush/soft quite attractive finish; quite a pretty/attractive white w/ little of the earthy/rustic character of many SouthernItaly whites; a rather high-level
pretty/high-toned white fairly atypical of Puglia whites; but not anything very distinctive. $21.50 (KK)

2. Manni Nossing Muller-Thurgau Sas Rigais DOC: Sudtirol Eisacktaler Kontrollierte UrSprungBezeichnung (12.5%; KermitLynch/Berkeley) Manni Nossing/Bressanone/Brixen 2019: Med.gold color;
slight herbal appley/floral/musky/pungent fairly classic M-T light earthy/bit loamy quite interesting/attractive nose; fairly tart/tangy strong apple/pear/musky/pungent/chamber pot slight grapefruity classic
M-T/pungent bit coarse totally dry slight metallic/tangy flavor; very long/lingering bit earthy/musky rather apple/pear/floral/classic M-T totally dry finish; a pretty classic expression of somewhat pungent
M-T and better than many German renditions. $27.00 (KK)

And a wee BloodyPulpit:
1. ManniNossing: Not recall seeing the term "Ursprungsbezeichnungen" on a label before. It is an EU term that identifies the wine as coming from a Protected Region
of Origin. M-T is a variety that, to me, has a somewhat musky/pungent bit coarse character that I associate w/ a chamber pot & lacks the high-toned character of R.

2. Verdeca: A grape used primarily as a blending grape in the region. Thought to have originated in Apulia. No DNA appears to have been done on this grape.
