A nice group of 9 gathered at Noreetuh Wednesday night to look at Pousse d’Or. No one had any GP era Pousse, but a nice survey of the newer stuff. Noreetuh did a great job with vaccine checks, service, and food. We had several musubi platters (including pork jowl, tuna, scallop, scallion and spam), mochiko fried chicken, dry aged steak, miso greens, and more.
2007 Pepiere Granite de Clisson Muscadet
Stony, taut, but a little bit of oxidation. I find a lot of bottle variation in these. Still,. A good core, and I enjoy (maybe more than others) B/B+
2013 Marc Morey Chassagne-Montrachet "En Virondot" 1er
Blind, and I thought Chablis, though with a little wood. Apple, flint, citrus. Good length,.B+
Bousse Flight #1
2011 Pousse d'Or Clos de la Bousse d'Or Volnay 1er
This had some funk, and was most advanced of the 3 (08, 09, 11). Red fruit, spice, leather, some barnyard. B/B-
2009 Pousse d'Or Clos de la Bousse d'Or Volnay 1er
Some others liked this more than me. Kirschy, one person called stewed but I just thought overripe, heavy, not for me. C+
2008 Pousse d'Or Clos de la Bousse d'Or Volnay 1er
Clearly best of flight, brighter, fresher, some wood gloss but good core of red fruit, B+/B.
Bousse #2
2005 Pousse d'Or Clos de la Bousse d'Or Volnay 1er
Weird nose, we debated Cheetos or Cool Ranch Doritos, most opted for former, I though Nacho Doritos. Bizarre. Better on palate, with nice sense of structure , but nose scrasms “don’t drink me.” C+/C
2002 Pousse d'Or Clos de la Bousse d'Or Volnay 1er
Whew, finally a real winner. My WOTN. Floral wood, spicy sandalwood notes, red cherry and raspberry, smooth long finish. Fully ready A_
Big Volnay Flight[
2002 Pousse d'Or Caillerets Volnay 1er
Red cherry and plums, vanilla, leather. In a good place. A-/B+
2010 Pousse d'Or Caillerets Volnay 1er
Pretty powerful, wild berry leaves, black raspberry, needs time. B for now, will be pretty good.
2002 Pousse d'Or Clos des 60 Ouvrees Volnay 1er
Bigger than the other ‘02 Volnays, less elegant, some tannin, lots of wood. B/B+
2010 Pousse d'Or Clos des 60 Ouvrees Volnay 1er
Big, but nicely balanced, darker fruits than others, lots of potential. B/B+ for now
On the Hill of Corton
2008 Pousse d'Or Corton Bressandes
Fresh, drinking remarkably well for young Corton, dark berry, cinnamon, orange peel, meat/gamebird notes. B+/A-
2010 Pousse d'Or Corton Bressandes
Dense, tight, more what I expect from young Corton. I think eventually will be good, but unsure if much pleasure now, at least not for me.
Fun night, great group. Unsure if this will make me more of a Pousse buyer, though I did like some. Certainly reinforced some vintage prejudices- 02s are lovely, ‘10 is all potential, ‘08 has great freshness, ‘11 is oddly mature. Hopefully the ‘05 was a one-off bottle.
Grade disclaimer: I'm a very easy grader, basically A is an excellent wine, B a good wine, C
drinkable. Anything below C means I wouldn't drink at a party where it was only choice.Furthermore, I offer no promises of objectivity, accuracy, and certainly not of consistency.
