WTN: Unfinished Symphony

  • 2019 Von Schubert Maximin Grünhäuser Abtsberg Riesling Kabinett - Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer (9/30/2021)
I don’t normally drink young Grunhaus wines, as I prefer them with 20-30 (or more) years of age. Since it had been a while, I decided to open a young Abstberg Kabinett, and it may be hard to not drink the rest of my bottles. Crunchy peach fruit splashed with lime juice is backed up by a bright piney/minty note. There’s a rainwater purity, and a dash of petrichor that adds a bass note to the wine. Acidity is fresh yet very well integrated for such a young wine. This is truly delicious now, though it has all the depth for a long, profitable aging curve.

Sounds great. And would that we all had enough stocks to enjoy 20-30 year old Grunhaus wine!

2019s are sold out at my favorite location, but have you tasted any 2020s from Grunhaus? I will buy some soon. Am debating also dabbling in the GGs, although I see MFW had some judicious comments and with so many other dry rieslings competing for my attention, probably won't buy too many.

Only 2020s I have had so far are from Keller and a couple of Austrian producers.
