WTN: Two New Idlewild Reds '19....(short/boring)

by TomHill » Tue Sep 28, 2021 5:32 pm

Cracked these two last night:
1. Idlewild Dolcetto LostHillsRanch/MendoCnty (12.2%; http://www.IdlewildWines.com) 2019: Fairly dark color w/ lots of tartrate crystals; strong grapey/Dolcetto/bit spicy light pencilly/oak slight earthy/mineral fairly serious/very deep quite attractive nose; rather tart/tangy strong grapey/Dolcetto bit earthy/dusty light toasty/pencilly/oak rather structured flavor w/ some hard/chewey tannins; very long/lingering rather grapey/Dolcetto/bit licorice light toasty/oak quite structured lightly tart finish w/ ample chewey tannins; not as soft/rich/lush as Piemonte Dolcetto; needs 2-6 yrs; this is a serious/atypical expression of Dolcetto. $30.00

2. Idlewild Barbera LostHillsRanch/MendoCnty (13.6%) 2019: Very dark/near black color; fairly strong Barbera/spicy/dried Italian herbs/pizza spices some toasty/smokey/oak bit complex lovely classic Barbera nose; very tart/tangy/acid very strong Barbera/spicy/pizza spices/Italian herbs quite structured fairly rich flavor w/ ample chewey tannins; very long/lingering very strong Barbera/spicy/pizza spices some earthy/dusty bit toasty/oak quite structured finish w/ strong chewey tannins; not as hard & a bit more fleshy than classic Piemonte Barberas but quite a good expression of Barbera. $40.00

A wee BloodyPulpit:
1. Sam's LostHillsVnyd in the Mendocino Highlands are just now coming into production and these two (and the '18 Nebb) are the first reds to come off this vnyd. Up until now, his wines are coming from the FoxHillVnyd in MendoCnty. Perhaps because of the youth of the vines, these two show somewhat more structure and are a bit tighter than those from FoxHill. But both are pretty classical expressions of these varieties.

Encouraging. My shipment is three days from completing my self-imposed 1 week post-shipment resting period.

Yup, David....they're a bit on the rugged side for Sam's reds, but I think you'll like them.
Look forward to the definitive TN's.
