WTN: 2003 Wendouree Shiraz Malbec, Clare Valley

by Mark Wickman » Tue Feb 20, 2007 10:53 pm

A superbly rich nose of small black fruits and fine chocolate.
A concentrated palate of dark plums, liquorice, cracked pepper and mulberry, filling the mouth with a core of chalky tannins and an ever so long finish.

We had this alongside a 1993 which seemed to have changed ever so slightly. The 1993 was more finely integrated but still very powerful and youthful, with a large liquorice component and a big stiff backbone of fruit tannins. Top marks for consistency.

More and more, I'm convinced that the Clare Valley is the place to look for elegant, structured, finely tuned Shiraz, Mark.

I think it may eventually turn out to overshadow some of the other more pr driven areas in Oz.

Hi Bob,

Thanks :)

Mollydooker huh.

I havn't taken any notes but I do have some overall impressions.

The Boxer I was not impressed with, I thought it was one-dimensional and hot.

The Carnival of love I had pre-conceived notions about and was actually pleasantly suprised and liked it. Nice flavour, packed full of fruit and chocolate and good length. Would I buy it for the price it is now ? No, but thats because my tastes run in a different direction, others who like this sort of thing and can see a future for it would probably love it.
Cheers
