Wine with Indian Food

by Bill Spohn » Thu Sep 09, 2021 7:15 pm

Couldn't decide whether to put this in wine or food, but as I am after what people think are the nest natches of wines with Indian food, this is a logical place (not trying to curry favour or course....)

Having lamb Rogan Josh tonight and pondering a Spanish white or a Chianti.

Thoughts? What brilliant combos have you come up with (and before you start we are not beer drinkers and have no interest in matching beer to food, just wine.).

And SWMBO always opts for the wuss low end of spiciness, so it won't unduly impact the wine choice. I go a bit warmer.

I eat a lot of Indian food, and frequently the same lamb dish. If it’s low spice then I enjoy Rosé Champagne and Nebbiolo. For the Nebbiolo I usually go younger Langhe Nebbiolo rather than sacrificing a cherished Barbaresco.

Good suggestion, thanks. I have some 2016 Cortese Langhe that might do the trick. Also pondering a 2012 Castell'in Villa Chianti Classico.

It's an obvious pairing, but a slightly off dry riesling usually works for me.

Rogan Josh is big on flavour - I'd pick Chianti -- indeed I did last month when we dined in an Indian restaurant.

But then again, have whatever you want.

Good call, Peter - and the same one I ended up making. Worked well.

I also agree with John that the slight residual sugar in a Riesling has the same muting effect on spicy food. Depending on what you are eating, a Kabinett is suitable, although if you have more heat to deal with, maybe a Spatlese.

John and I attended a tasting many years ago that I still recall well. It was at a Cambodian restaurant and it was a tasting of Rieslings. John was still opening great wines when the waiters were sitting around with their coats on, wanting us to get out so they could go home! :D (Jenise was also there IIRC.)

Indeed I was there. John was the organizer, IIRC. GREAT dinner.
My wine shopping and I have never had a problem. Just a perpetual race between the bankruptcy court and Hell.--Rogov
