WTN: 1977 Madeira Terrantez Reserva, D'Oliveira

by Paul Winalski » Wed Sep 01, 2021 10:50 am

Deep but clear red-gold color. Very tightly closed in when first poured, but after half an hour or so it opened up to reveal whiffs of flowers, caramel, and smoke. The first mouthful was a big surprise. Based on the shy aromas, I had been expecting shy flavors, too. Just the opposite--such intense flavors that I experienced sensory overload. This is a wine that has to be taken in small sips. It is bone dry. There are concentrated flavors of Seville oranges, grapefruit and caramel. The wine is fiercely acidic. The finish follows the flavors and goes on for about ten minutes.

40+ years past the vintage apparently isn't long enough to wait on this one, although I suspect decanting it a day or two in advance would help tame it. If you have any, I advise waiting another 20 years before trying one. Once this wine hits its stride, I suspect it will be enjoyable for over 200 years. Triple Moe with an extra Woo! Woo! Woo!

Was this a '77 and not a '97?

Either way, sounds intense!

Yes, 1977. I've fixed the typo. Thanks.

It is indeed intense. It reminds me of the way you can get sensory overload from a TBA or Tokaji esssencia. Anything more than a tiny sip overwhelms the palate.

Many thanks for this note. I have a bottle of this, but I don't think I can wait another 20 years. Will try decanting as you suggested in case I open this in the near future.

Envy, content, and sufficient champagne.
