WTN: A German & A Tuscan @ Dinner....(short/boring)

by TomHill » Mon Aug 23, 2021 4:07 pm

Had these two Fri night w/ Susan @ Dinner:
1. Nik Weis St.Urbans-Hof Riesling OldVines Qualitatswein (10.5%; A.P.Nr. 3 529 290 13 21; http://www.NikWeis.com) NikWeis/Leiwen/Mosel 2020: Light gold color w/ loads of bubbles clinging to the side of the glass; lovely very fragrant R/floral/mango/bit pineapple some Mosel/slatey/flinty/mineral quite perfumed nose; quite tart/tangy near dry (0.5%-0.8% r.s.?) strong floral/R/mango/pineapple some steely/flinty/mineral brisk/bright/Mosel flavor w/ no signs of dissolved CO2; very long fairly tart/tangy/steely near dry bright/floral/R/mango some mineral finish; a very pretty classic Mosel at a great price; nothing profound but great drinking & should improve over the next 2-5 yrs; not as good as the quite dry '18 and would prefer it a bit drier. $20.00

2. Piazzano Ciliegiolo IGT: Toscana (13.5%; GiulianaImprts/Boulder; EB; http://www.fattoriadipiazzano.it/en) RolandoBettarini/Empoli 2019: Very dark color; rather earthy/dusty/OV some cherry/Sangio-like bit plummy/blackberry some rough/rustic nose; soft some tangy/metallic rather cherry/Sangio-like/plummy some earthy/loamy/dusty/OV somewhat rustic/rough/coarse flavor w/ light rough tannins; long soft bit tart/metallic/tangy hard rather earthy/loamy/dusty/OV rather rough/coarse/rustic slight cherry/Sangio-like/plummy somewhat brisk/hard finish w/ light bitey/coarse tannins; a rather light/tangy/rustic/rough Italian red that remnds some of a richer Chianti; a pleasant rough Tuscan but nothing more.
$14.50 (KK)

A wee BloodyPulpit:
1. Ciliegiolo: There is some debate whether this grape is a parent or an off-spring of Sangio. Some claim it's origins are in Spain, but that seems unlikely. It is also grown in Umbria. Name means "little cherry". Used mostly as a blending variaty in Tuscan wines. There has been a mild renaissance in making it has a varietal red. There is nothing in this wine that suggests it should be planted all up&down the coast of Calif. However, I think it could make an interesting & very good red in Calif.
