WTN: Bacon, Burgs, Bubbles, Beaujolais, and more

Ah, Baconfest. Betsy joined me to drive to Paul and Sandy’s in NJ. A nice group was gathered in a lovely backyard with gazebo, and the food (and wine) started flowing. Chips and dips, excellent wings with the side , and then the main event- BLTs. 3 breads, multiple varieties of homegrown tomatoes, lettuce, and of course Bacon #1 and Bacon #2 (there used to be more candidates, but Paul said since same two always come out on top, just 2 candidates. Both were excellent, but the North Country Smokehouse got the majority of votes over the Vande Rose. Some excellent sides as well- black bean salad, cucumber salad, pasta salad. And Jay’s Golden Syrup cookies for dessert.

2006 Taittinger Comtes de Champagne Blanc de Blancs

2000 Taittinger Comtes de Champagne Rose
Nicely mature, creamy texture with red berries, citrus peel, a hint of mushroom. A-

2001 Nigl Privat Gruner Veltliner (mag)
Great, and plenty of it! Green apple, white pepper, with a honied edge (though not sweet). Fun, versatile, long. A-/B+

2017 Henri Germain Le Limozin Meursault
Very precise, good cut, elegant. A-

2018 Janvier “Silex” Jasnieres
Grapefruit acidity, floral, flinty. Good match with BLTs. B+/B

2000 Nikolaihof Vinothek Riesling
Crisp and rich, nice length, touch of alcohol,. Solid. B+

2002 Drouhin Clos des Mouches Beaune rouge
Black raspberry, autumn leaves, sandalwood, nice texture and finish. Beautiful Mouches. A-

1998 Potel Bonnes Mares

Spicy, ripe red fruit, still a touch of oak. not especially BM and a little shorter than hoped. B

2018 Bouland Les Delys Morgon
Yes, this is on ripe side for Beaujolais, but it carries it quite well, black cherry, cocoa, and spice.B+/A-

1993 Huet LHL Moulleux 1er showed advanced, probably storage/shipping issue.

Great lineup of wine, food, and friends.

Grade disclaimer: I'm a very easy grader, basically A is an excellent wine, B a good wine, C
drinkable. Anything below C means I wouldn't drink at a party where it was only choice.Furthermore, I offer no promises of objectivity, accuracy, and certainly not of consistency.

The 2006 CdC is a wonderful wine, as is the 2007. Shame for both that they get overshadowed by the 2008.

The 2006 is the CdC that turned my head in a way none had before. Because of it, I now own quite a bit (for me, anyway) of 07 and 08.

Really envy you that Drouhin, Dale. My second major Burgundy love.

And I love the idea of a BLT party. GREAT.
My wine shopping and I have never had a problem. Just a perpetual race between the bankruptcy court and Hell.--Rogov
