WTN: TablasCreek PetiteManseng '17...(short/boring)

by TomHill » Mon Aug 09, 2021 4:40 pm

Cracked this new arrival last night:
1. TablasCreekVnyd PetiteManseng Estate/AdelaidaDist/PasoRobles (14.4%) 2017: Fairly deep golden color; very intense ripe/grapey/pineapply/mango/very ripe peaches very perfumed/floral quite aromatic beautiful nose; quite tart/tangy intense ripe peaches/apricots/floral/gardenias/pineapply fairly sweet (5%-8% r.s.?) very perfumed quite exotic some spicy/cardamon beautiful flavor; very long/lingering rather tart but not sweet/sour intense peach/apricot/mango/pineapple quite sweet very ripe beautiful complex finish that goes on & on; much better than any Jurancon PM I can recall because it's not as coarse/rustic as those can be; a stunning Calif dessert wine that should go out 10-15 yrs. $32.50/500 ml (VIN)

A wee BloodyPulpit:
1. PetiteManseng is a grape variety grown in the Jurancon region of SouthernFrance up in the Pyrenees. It is harvested late, in October usually. Sometimes botrytis plays a role but not always.
This wine was better than any Jurancon dessert wine I can recall having. It reminded me some of the Breganze Torcolato. Probably more like some of the Picolets from Friuli.
This was a recent VINsider shipment. The price is normally $40/500 ml. It just arrived last week & I was dying to try it. I had it w/ fresh peaches from Palisades CO in cream&Crema from Honduras and it was a killer match. Alas, I drank nearly the whole friggin' btl & there was scant any left for Laura's & Dustin's breakfast wine. I'm going back for more.

I've not had PM as a dessert wine, to my knowledge, but this sounds enchanting.
My wine shopping and I have never had a problem. Just a perpetual race between the bankruptcy court and Hell.--Rogov

Tom, you must have been very unlucky in your choice of Jurançon if you find them "coarse/rustic". I rate both their sweet and dry from good growers among some of the finest whites in France with a very original character conferred by the terroir and the G & P Manseng grapes. Those grapes also perform well in Pacherenc de Vic-Bihl and Irouléguy, but in my limited experience without quite the same cachet as Jurançon.

PS: I was told by a Jurançon grower that botrytis never plays a role in Jurançon.

I am looking at the August TC specials. They have a Counoise for $28, and there are several other varietals that seem interesting. Bourbolenc, Roussane, Vermentino, Cinsault, etc. For those in TC clubs (and others), any recommendations?

Yup, Pat.... the '18 Esprit de Tablas Blanc at $30 is an absolute steal. Very good & will age for probably 10 yrs or more.

My price as VinDependent = $36. Ouch. Other ideas?
