WTN: Not quite on the boil

2001 Erbacher Marcobrunn Riesling Kabinett, Langwerth von Simmern

Lovely gold color. Exuberant floral (peony) and fruit (peach, pear) aromas. Lots going on in the flavor--full-bore classic mature riesling. Sweetness and acidity in exquisite balance. Tails up with citrus fruits in a long finish. A beautiful wine. This must be what old school tie English connoisseurs meant by "great old Hock". I'm pleasantly surprised to find a Kabinett still going this strong at age 20. But I generally can't keep my hands off them for that long. Double Curly Larry.

-Paul W.

P.S.: The price sticker was still on the bottle. I bought it for $16 at first release. Recent vintages are going for three times that.

Lucky you. Sounds great. But if you were pleasantly surprised and generally don't keep your kabinetts this long, what led to the aging for this one? Did you forget about it?!

Modem (post 1996) Kabinetts are potentially very long lived. I am still holding some 2001 QBA wines.
