1948 Bordeaux

Thought you might get a kick out of this.

I'm reading a book by Dick Francis, who was the Champion Jockey of England in the 1950s and rode for the Queen Mother.

He was quite good at writing racing related books, but not so good at wine (unless this instance was due to an equally ignorant editor). The protagonist was described as consuming a "1948 Ch.Leauville Lescases" with supper. Hmmm.....presumably from the San Julyen area?

No reason to make a wine up - just ignorance and/or bad spelling, I think.

In Brideshead Revisited, Evelyn Waugh, who was a snob about high society and stylish living, committed the vinous solecism of having his principle character waxing lyrically about Clos de Bère (sic). He corrected it in later editions http://www.thedevilinthegrape.com/evelyn-waugh.html .

Excellent example, Tim. I should go back and reread Brideshead some time soon, and /or rewatch it.

I love the 80s TV series of Brideshead with Jeremy Irons in the main role, the grandiose actors Laurence Olivier and John Gielgud in parental roles and a credible supporting cast. However, from trailers and isolated clips, the 00s remake looks tawdry by comparison.

Agree that the original Brideshead was excellent. Although I like Matthew Goode and generally enjoy his work, I doubt he could save a remake.

I must put my DVDs of the original in the to be watched again pile!
