Eberle, in German, means "small boar". So there is a statue of a boar on the way into the tasting room, and the boar is featured on the wine label.
Syrah 2010, Steinbeck Vineyard, Paso Robles
Excerpts from TN, Other comments:
Purple to inky fading to garnet then light brick rim. Medium plus legs; moderate sediment in the bottle which was more apparent on Day 2. I'd put the bottle upright for 2 days before opening. And used my Coravin for two reasons: age of wine, and still testing the relatively new Model 5 I acquired. Long story, but Coravin stood by their product when we received a defective earlier model. Messy.....
Aromas are dark fruit dominant: blackberry, blueberry, sour cherry, plum. Interesting rim of many colors; wine was a bit inky but that I expected. After the dark fruit, noted hints of jam, vanilla, eucalyptus and chocolate. No oak, no smoke. Medium to full body. Smooth. Medium minus acidity, medium plus finish. Finish was actually longer on Day 2 than Day 1. Impression: complex, balanced, compelling. Seems at prime. The evolving finish and subtle differences between the two days were interesting. Drink now or next year.
At the tasting room in 2012, Eberle allowed 6 free tastes per person. Our server, once he realized I was even then a geek, proceeded to exceed that limit. I noted what he was about to do. He said something to the effect of they make the rules, but I break them. Liked his style.
Smug moment: we selected this wine as one of several to buy. About 6 months later, the wine made the WS Top 100 list. I don't use that list extensively as a buying guide, but I had already gotten ours. WS rating was 93; they noted wine as drink through 2022.
