WTN: Grignolino, take a stop and look around

  • 2020 Idlewild Grignolino Fox Hill Vineyard - USA, California, North Coast, Mendocino County (6/27/2021)
It’s a dark Rosé or very light red depending on how you want to look at it. Aromatics blossom from the glass, with red berries, green herbs, and a splash of orange zest. Light on the palate, yet full of flavor, the acidity cuts through the richness of our pizza like a hot knife through butter. Interesting and promising first effort with this grape from Idlewild. I will let my other bottle sit a bit before trying again.

A walk through memory lane. When we moved to CA in late 1990s, took a wine-oriented trip North as our first vacation. Stopped at Heitz. Bought a Grignolino. Maybe $5-$6 bucks. Even then thought it was an interesting grape. Now, online more recent vintages sell for $27 & up. And, of course, Heitz is generally not a target brand for us. Too $$$$.

Always liked that wine. Recently had a dark rose made here in Washington from a Sangiovese and Cab Franc blend that reminded me of Heitz Grignolino quite a bit. Not many in that category--should be more.
My wine shopping and I have never had a problem. Just a perpetual race between the bankruptcy court and Hell.--Rogov
