Tried this new wine this weekend:
1. Oliver's TarengaVnyds Mencia McLarenVale/SA (13.0%; www.OliversTaranga.com; EpicureanWines/Seattle; SmallBatch # 4001) McLarenVale/SA 2019: Very dark/near black color; very strong blackberry/boysenberry/Mencia/licorice/plummy rather Lagrein/Zweigelt-like very grapey some earthy/loamy bit Spanish Mencia-like but not as earthy lovely lush nose; rather soft/fat quite rich/lush very strong Mencia/plummy/boysenberry/licorice/RCCola bit Oz-like/ripe/grapey some AA/Lagrein-like very Burgenland-like quite interesting bit rustic flavor w/ some grippy tannins; very long/lingering bit soft/ripe licorice/Mencia/plummy/boysenberry some earthy/loamy rather Burgenland/Zweigelt-like bit complex finish w/ modest grippy tannins; quite an interesting red that speaks of Mencia w/ an Aussie brogue, but not as earthy/mineral; reminds a bit of Burgenland Zweigelt or AltoAdige Lagrein, a bit of ContraCosta Mataro but more grapey; quite a lovely bit rustic red. $34.50 (KK)

A wee BloodyPulpit:
1. Mencia is the Spanish grape grown mostly in the NW Galicia region of Spain. It is identical to the Portugese Jaen grape, which is probably the origins of the grape.
