No Gamay, Got Cabernet

by Pat G » Sun May 23, 2021 5:49 pm

Know that GaMay is grape of the month. Too much wine here, so opened a cabernet. At least it rhymes:

Kimmel Four Blocks, Mendocino, 2011

Very good clarity, but some sediment evident. Upright for 48 hours before opening. Aromas are dark fruit forward: blackberry, blueberry, black currant. Just a hint of plum, but no dried fruit. On the palate, dark fruits maintain and a hint of dust emerges. The tannins are fruit, no wood detected. And there's just a bit of cinnamon and chocolate on the palate, very subtle. Medium to full body. Smooth, almost silky texture. Impression: varietally correct, aged well. Even in 2011, one can find good Cabernet in CA. Received from a wine club before I discontinued most of those. I'd drink now.

Staying power over multiple days, too. The acidity helped. Longevity after opening a big bonus.

Another California winery I've never heard of--so many! But yes, unusual that an '11 lasted so long for you--must have had a lot, maybe too much, acidity in its youth.
My wine shopping and I have never had a problem. Just a perpetual race between the bankruptcy court and Hell.--Rogov
