WTN: 2013 Beaujolais, two bottles in different states

2013 Coudert Griffe du Marquis Fleurie
Lovely. I bought a bunch on release and at a certain point they had gotten all bound up in the structure. But this is my last bottle and is clearly moving well past that tight stage. Dark sweet fruit but with suave grip in the texture as the bottle-aged harmony is arriving! Still some freshness on the finish, so it's not going anywhere. If anything, the slightly crunchy snap on the finish makes me suspect it has more resolving to do. But, I was happy to drink it and enjoy it. So no regrets!

2013 G Descombes Morgon VV
This bottling has been a good friend to me over the years; so elegant and enjoyable. Unfortunately, this last bottle was marred by brett and I have no more! Underneath I could still get elements of the gorgeous evolved Descombes Morgon that I love so much. But the brett was too strong and not worth it for me to drink. I opened something else instead.

Thanks.Sorry about the Brett. it sounds as far as drinking they were in a good place, just a bacterial flaw. I was pondering some 2013s this weekend But I ended up with a 2011 Coudert Tardive. But think the '13 GdM was one I passed by, time to dig out.

Yeah, for my tastes the 2013 Descombes VVs have been 'fully mature' and coasting for a while. The texture is fully resolved but still vibrancy of fruit. Not sure how long that will last. The Regnie seems more fragile, but the Morgon should be great if sound, and this bottle seemed to have the lovely structure and texture of aged Descombes Morgon. The brett flavors were just too much.

Have either of you ever tried the 2014 Decombes Morgon VV? I had a few bottles, and they were all quite strange. I never felt comfort even doing a note. Wondering if I just got duff bottles.

2014 was a lighter year and fine with dinner but not something I wanted to buy in any quantity. Whereas I've loved 8-10 bottles each of the 2013 Regnie VV and Morgon VV, which is a lot for me.

Although I seem to remember having a related discussion with you before, and you mentioned you had been underwhelmed by the 2014 regular? (VVs have the wax capsules) I don't think I had the 2014 regular Morgon, but have never been too 'excited' by the regulars in general, and can imagine the 2014 was not amazing.

I eventually had both the regular and the VV.

Aha. And the VV wasn't any better than the regulars? That's a shame.

The regular was simple and boring. The VV was just strange.
