WTN: Six Calif/Italian Nebbiolos...(short/boring)

by TomHill » Wed May 19, 2021 4:14 pm

Tried these six Nebbs over the last week:
1. Marziano Abbona BriccoBarone DOC: Nebbiolo d'Alba (14.5%; ToscoImprts) Marziano Abbona/Dogliani 2016: Med.color; very strong Nebb/floral/lilacs somewhat earthy/loamy bit pungent/tarry quite attractive nose; quite tart/acidic/tannic light flral/lilacs/Nebb some pungent/tarry rather earthy/loamy/rustic/rough flavor w/ ample chewey tannins; very long quite acidic/tannic some floral/Nebb/lilacs slight tarry/pungent finish w/ ample tannins; quite an attractive Nebb nose but rather hurts on the palate; needs more age to soften on the palate, which it may never do. $24.00 (EVN)
_____________
2. piantagrossa 396 AesculusHippocastanum DOC: Valle d'Aoste (13.5%; ToscoImprts; www.PiantaGrossaDonnas.It) Zoppo Ronzero Luciano/Donnas 2017: Med.dark color w/ some bricking; very strong earthy/mushroomy rather floral/Nebb/violets/lilacs quite fragrant light floral/Alpine flowers some complex lovely nose; quite tart/tangy perfumed/Nebb/floral/lilacs/Alpine flowers bit earthy/mushroomy/truffly/pungent bit complex flavor w/ light tangy tannins; very long/lingering fairly rich strong floral/lilacs/violets/Nebb/Alpine flowers some earthy/mushroomy/truffly light toasty/cedary bit complex finish w/ light tangy tannins; quite an interesting/lovely expression of Nebb very unlike Piemonte & a bit more towards Valtelline. $29.00 (EVN)
_____________
3. Sandro fay Tei DOC: Rosso di Valtellina (12%; Nebbiolo) Marco Fay/SanGiacomo di Teglio 2016: Med.light colorl lovely fragrant Nebb/floral/lilacs slight funky/metallic bit earthy/tarry some rustic bit complex nose; very tart/acidic rather tannic somewhat richer fairly floral/lilacs/Nebb/violets/perfumed rather earthy/dusty/bit truffly fairly hard/lean flavor w/ ample hard/chewey/grippy tannins; very long rather acidic/tannic some floral/lilacs/Nebb rather earthy/mushroomy/rustic finish w/ hard/grippy tannins; quite a lovely Nebb nose but rather hurts on the palate; not sure age will soften this wine to make it a great Valtelline Nebb. $44.00 (EVN)
_____________
4. Idlewild Nebbiolo FoxHillVnyd/MendoCnty (13.9%; www.IdlewildWines.com) 2017: Med.light color; very fragrant floral/lilacs/Nebb very slight pungent/tarry light toasty/oak fairly classic Langhe-level Nebb lovely nose; quite tart/tangy/brisk strong floral/lilacs/Nebb/violets light earthy/tarry light toasty/oak rather spicy/thyme flavor w/ light brisk/tangy tannins; very long/lingering fairly floral/lilacs/violets/Nebb light tarry bit toasty/pencilly/oak finish w/ light brisk tannins; shows a lot of the floral/aromatic side of Nebb; quite an attractive expression of Calif Nebb of the Langhe level but a bit more intensity & structure; well-managed tannins that don't take your head off; needs some 2-5 yrs to develop more complexity. $48.00
_____________
5. Harrington Nebbiolo Berardo + LunaMattaVnyds/PasoRobles (14.2%)2012: Med.color w/ some bricking; rather tarry/pungent/earthy/dusty light Nebb/floral/lilacs some cedary/pencilly/oak some complex old Nebb nose; lightly tart/tangy modest tarry/earthy/dusty light floral/Nebb/lilacs some old Nebb/aromatic bit complex flavor w/ modest hard/gritty tannins; long some cedary/pencilly/oak modest earthy/dusty/pungent some floral/Nebb/lilacs bit complex finish w/ some hard tannins; more like an older Gattinara than anything but a rather hard/tough/rough/tannic Nebb that not sure is going anywhere & lacks the perfume of an older Piemonte Nebb.
______________
6. Terrane Nebbiolo Berardo + LunaMattaVnyds/PasoRobles (14.1%) HarringtonWines/SanFrancisco 2012: Slightly darker color; slightly brighter/floral/lilacs/Nebb bit pungent/tarry bit more fragrant/perfumed/aromatic nose; some rather hard/tannic slightly more floral/lilacs/Nebb/perfumed lighter tarry/pungent bit more complex w/ ample hard/gritty tannins; bit more longer/lingering bit more floral/fragrant/Nebb/lilacs slightly softer bit complex finish w/ ample hard/gritty tannins; also like an older AltoPiemonte Nebb w/ a bit more floral/Nebb character; a bit softer on the palate but still pretty hard/tannic on the palate.

A wee BloodyPulpit:
1. Harrington: I thought these two would show a bit more maturity than they did. Quite attractive Nebb noses but still pretty hard on the palate & not sure they will outlast those tannins. The Terrane version is made with no added SO2 at bottling, but uses a Swiss grape-based anti-oxidant product instead. In all the Harrington/Terrane comparisons I've made, I've tended tp prefer the Terrane by a slight margin. An anti-oxidant product that nobody else in the world has picked up on; not even some of the "natural" winemakers.
