WTN: Two Interesting Calif Whites....(short/boring)

by TomHill » Wed May 19, 2021 3:12 pm

Tasted these two over the last week:
1. Dirty&Rowdy Furmint AlderSpringsVnyd/MendoCnty (14.3%) P&B by Get Yourself A Cast Iron Skillet/Petaluma 2015: Med.gold/burnished bronze color; some herbal/Furmint/earthy slight floral/pungent/marigolds/zennias slight cedary quite exotic/interesting nose; lightly tart/metallic some floral/pungent/marigolds/Furmint slight herbal/earthy slight pineapple/mango/caramel quite exotic flavor w/ slight tannic trace; very long/lingering some pungent/herbal/earthy some floral/marigolds/pungent/musky bit pineapple/mango quite unusual/exotic finish w/ slight tannins; not as fragrant/perfumed/floral as many Hungarian dry Furmints & shows a bit of musky coarseness but quite an interesting/savory/bit pungent expression of Furmint.
____________
2. Solminer GelberMuskateller DeLandaVnyd/LosOlivosDist (13%; 100% MuscatCanelli; 36 cs; www.Solminer.com) Lompoc 2017: Light gold color; strong muscatty/floral bit earthy/herbal some chalky/mineral/metallic quite attractive nose;lightly tart quite dry slightly rich fairly muscatty/floral some chalky/mineral/bit metallic/tangy light earthy quite attractive flavor; very long strong floral/muscatty bit rich some minerally/chalky/metallic lovely finish; shows no trace of bitterness common in dry muscats; a quite good replication of an Austrian GM; avoids the intense tutti-fruity side of pure MuscatCanelli; has put on some weight since its release.

A wee BloodyPulpit:
1. Furmint: This was a cooperative effort between D&R and Cruse Wnry. A pretty rare wine. It has matured into quite an exotic expression of Furmint & I suspect will go on another 3-6 yrs. Furmint is the grape that has the highest phenolic content of any of the white grape varieties. Would be interesting to see what it would yield if made as a ViniMacerati.
_______________
2. Solminer: I sometimes fault the Solminer whites as being a bit on the simple/bland side & wanting just a bit more oomph. But this Muscat has really evolved into quite a nice expression of a dry Muscat.

I like Austrian Furmint. Didn't take the plunge on that D&R wine - one of the few I did not try,

Yup, David... I've particularly liked the HeidiSchrock Furmints. I understand she no longer makes it. Which is a shame.
And I've liked a lot of the Hungarian dry Furmints, but they're not as serious as the Burgenland ones.
