I aim to give or serve to friends and family wines which I would be happy to drink myself. That can be a modestly priced wine from a less prestigious appellation which I think offers interesting character and good QPR, e.g. Fronton and Marcillac. There are some wines, e.g. Chambertin from Rousseau, which I reserve for special occasions and/or particularly discriminating company. As such events are not frequent, especially during lockdown, my cellar is tending to become unbalanced towards such "special" bottles, which risk falling into the "over the hill" category  :( .

Me too - certainly if I am going to share them rather than just give :)

I also aim to give/share wines I think the recipient would enjoy. That is not at all necessarily the wine that various wine nuts would consider good or the best - often, normal people prefer stuff they are more familiar and comfortable with. And some of my wine friends would not fully appreciate wines to my personal tastes either.

The wines I am least likely to share are those that mean a lot more to me than they would to others. Bottles picked up on holiday for example, or weird natural wines.

I don't actually think of gifts/sharing as same.

For giving wine I have a few categories
Need a quick gift/hostess gift/etc- no indication person is into wine (Betsy often asks for something for someone hosting her at a chamber music festival)- nothing flawed or bad, but often something I bought but decided not to my tastes. Often NV vintage champagne, or basic $20-30 red,

Birthyear/anniversary wines, Usually modest examples ('62 Lyonnat- Lussac-StEm)

Special wines for special people- rare, usually I;d prefer to share, but if impratical..

Sharing is different, There are a few bottles I hold for particular people, but mostly it's let's have fun. If someone shows curiosity, I'd love to show them a great example of what is out there.

Same here; perfectly put.

Or if they didn't they'd never tell you. That is, of course they enjoy your wine--but if they could have a fleshy Sonoma cab instead, would the Bordeaux win?

True story: a notorious former member of this forum was a Bordeaux nut. Age 75, wife died, and he started 'dating' (cough cough) much younger women, target age approx 20-22 best we could tell and all of whom--per his excited initial reports--found his Bordeaux wines exceptional though none had ever had Bordeaux before. It came to pass though that the girls, when given a choice, preferred the cheap and simple Estancia pinot he kept on hand.

My point: not everyone appreciates complexity. I run into it here where I live--I know lots of wine lovers, but their tastes skew new world. I save the Bdx for Bob and I or our Canadian friends.
