WTN- a blend, a Malbec, and a Cotes du Rhone

Langmeil "Three Gardens" 2004- This is a blend of Barossa Shiraz, Grenache and Mourvedre, from Australia. I drank it in a dimly lit room, so have nothing on the color. Pepper and cedar dominated the nose, with some berries as an afterthought. Soft buttery palate was less fruity than I expected, with cigar box, pepper, tar, and smoke predominate, oak obvious, and, again, very light berries. Finish was short to medium, and only here did any fruit become obvious, with blackberries and pepper lingering.

$16.95

Domaine du Vieux Chene Cotes du Rhone, 2003- Cigar box and cherry cordial nose. Oak, birch, truffle, berries, a tiny hint of vanilla, and tannins in the palate. Not fruity, but dry and slightly sharp. Finish is thick and dry, lasting perhaps 20 seconds. Dull granet colored. Personal rating of 87.

Trapiche Oak Cask Malbec, 2004- Deep black with bright ruby edges. Berry, cedar and vanilla make a full oaked nose. The palate is strongly oaked, with vanilla and toasted flavors initially overpowering others. Teh finish is far better than the palate itself, developing slowly to inclue cocoa, vanilla, bacon fat, coffee, and berries. Dry and tannic. Personal rating 85.

We used to see the Trapiche up here but many new producers seem to have edged it off the shelves. Think this winery is more traditional in its wine making approach!

Hi David,
The Langmeil hit a home run with one vintage (I think 2002), I've been less impressed with their latest efforts. Not bad wine, just left me going 'Huh".

Since I know where you do a lot of your shopping, you might want to try the 2003 Chateau de Segries (Lirac). For the most part I've avoided So. Rhone in 2003 due to ripeness/alcohol levels, but this offering seems to handle the vintage nicely, especially with a decant for an hour or two. I believe it still retails for $13.98.

Did you by chance buy/try any of the ESJ wines?

Take care,
Bill

I agree wholeheartedly on the Lirac- I've got half a case of it. It's a great inexpensive casual wine. I've not tried the ESJ yet, but it's definitely on my list.

The Shadow, the Wylie-Fenaughty and to a certain extent the Los Robles Viejos, all benefit from a couple of hours in the decanter.
Glad you like the Lirac..I see some palate calibration going on here :)
