Diamond in the rough (St. Innocent)

by Ben E. » Sat Feb 17, 2007 11:11 pm

Just a story:

So I recently popped open my 1er Cru Volnay (the "Oh my..." thread), and I was kind of bummed that it left my cellar Pinot-less. I was at the local city-owned liquor store to grab a couple bottles of wine for a party and I stopped by the French section. There was only one 1er Cru, a 2003, but I passed since I was really hoping to replace my 2002 since it was so good.

Anyway, I stroll over to the general pinot section, and right before my eyes if a 2004 St. Innocent Seven Springs Pinot. Now, I haven't been around the board for awhile, but I did remember that an earlier vintage of that wine was a big to-do. I grabbed a bottle and notice that there is only one more. I didn't know if it was any good, so I left the 2nd bottle.

When I got home, I hopped on the Internet to discover that 2004 is supposed to be a great year for Oregon, and that I was remembering correctly that St. Innocent Seven Springs it premium stuff. The thought of that second bottle is picking at me.

Long-story short, I drive back and buy the 2nd bottle, and then I drive to the sister store and buy the 2 bottles they had. I am now the proud owner of 4 bottles. I'm sure that I'll be glad I did it come 2012 or so.

Ben, just so we can avoid future sob stories, how about stocking your cellar with enough Pinot Noir that you never run out?

Nothing rough about that!

You won't be sorry. You would never, FWIW, be sorry about any vintage of St. Innocent Seven Springs but, yeah, with the 2004, you've hit the bottle out of the park. Good move.
