Vega Sicilia

by Richard L » Sat Apr 24, 2021 6:44 am

I was wondering if anyone was familiar with Vega Sicilia (It is in Rioja, and Sicilia is the name of a local Saint.). I basically knew nothing about it when our club fairly recently had one of its wine dinners. Despite the travel problems, the winemaker was there. One of the wines was phenomenal, but so expensive that I do not know if anyone bought any (though some of the members could afford it). There was another wine that was very good indeed and had a reasonable price, and quite a few people (including my wife and I) bought it. The reds were so good that my wife drank them happily, though she normally greatly prefers whites (there were some but they were less memorable to me). The vintages were fairly recent. Richard L

It's actually in Ribera del Duero, not Rioja. It's one of the flagship estates of its region. The fantastic (and fantastically priced) wine would have been Unico Gran Reserva. Unico is sort of like the super-Tuscans. It's 80% tempranillo and 20% cabernet sauvignon. I haven't had any Vega Sicilia wines for decades.

Owned some, loved them. But not a buyer now. Can't justify the cost.

To Paul Winalski: i thought I had posted this before, but that can happen with me. You are quite right, of course, that it is in Ribeira del Duero, but i saw something that mistakenly put it in Rioja (It does have vineyards there and in Hungary).
To Jenise: the red we bought was quite affordable as well as very enjoyable, and the club does not usually provide wines at greatly reduced prices. The time here is 5:16 pm, not 8:16 pm Richard L
