WTN: Two New Carlisle '19's...(short/boring)

by TomHill » Mon Apr 12, 2021 3:53 pm

My Carlisle shipment arrived Fri, so I have my week's work cut out for me. Tried the first two last night:
1. Carlisle GrunerVeltliner SteinerVnyd/SonomaMtn/SonomaCnty (13.6%; SaH: 22.3 Brix, TA: 0.75 gm/100 ml; 150 cs) Windsor 2019: Light gold color; very fragrant GV/white pepper/floral/gardenias quite spicy slight chalky/mineral very aromatic beautiful nose; lightly tart very strong GV/white pepper/floral/white flowers/gardenias very spicy light chalky/mineral very aromatic/spicy flavor; very long/lingering fairly tart very perfumed/aromatic strong GV/white pepper/floral/very spicy slight mineral/chalky very balanced beautiful finish; easily the best & most Austrian/authentic GV made in Calif; one that can go mano-a-mano w/ any GV from ViennaHills or Niederosterreich; a really lovely expression of GV that's more Austrian than Calif; very well-priced at $24.50

2. Carlisle Syrah SonomaCnty (15.0%; 165 cs) 2019: Very dark color; very strong blackberry/Syrah/boysenberry/ripe/big fruit light toasty/oak fairly spicy lovely aromatic nose; fairly soft very strong blackberry/Syrah/spicy/ripe/boysenberry slight earthy lovely flavor w/ light ripe tannins; very long/lingering ripe/Syrah/blackberry/spicy/boysenberry bit toasty/oak finish w/ modest ripe tannins; a very tasty/easy-drinking Syrah at a great price. $25.00

A wee BloodyPulpit:
1. GV: Mike has been a big fan of Gruner and was one of the first to make GV in Calif. To my taste, his has always been the best of them. This one, fresh off the boat, didn't seem as intense/rich/Smaargd-level as some in the past, but I suspect it will put on weight over the next few months and evolve into another outstanding Carlisle GV.

2. Syrah: Though not a profound Calif Syrah, this was an absolutely delicious Calif Syrah at a great price. Fortunately, my group backed up the truck on this wine. Should improve some over the next few yrs.

Any thoughts on this Carlisle Syrah versus the Bedrock Syrah?

Yup, David... I should have addressed that.
The Carlisle is a big fruit/juicy/forward Syrah. The Bedrock is a bit more structured & interesting. I somewhat prefer the Bedrock. Plus it's cheaper.

I think (but don’t exactly recall) that the Bedrock is a little lower ABV as well. Will have to look tomorrow.

Bedrock says 14.5%. So not too different.
