WTN: Three Schioppettinos...(short/boring)

by TomHill » Sat Apr 10, 2021 6:29 pm

Tasted these three over the last two days:
1. Matthiasson Schioppettino MatthaissonVnyd/NapaVlly (11%; 151 cs; pH: 3.42, TA: 0.66 gm/100ml) 2018: Med.color; very fragrant very white pepper/Schio bit herbal almost Cab-like light pencilly/oak quite lovely nose; rather tart/bit lean some peppery/black pepper/Schio light earthy light pencilly/oak light-bodied pretty flavor w/ light brisk tannins; med.long lightweight rather tart/tangy/lean some white pepper/floral/Schio bit earthy light pencilly/oak bright/lean finish w/ light brisk tannins; speaks of Schio but would like a bit more richness & texture on the palate; a rather pretty Schio but just that. $45.00
________
2. Ronco del Gnemiz Schioppettino Dd'OC: Friuli Colli Orientali (13.5%; GiulianaImprts/Boulder) San Giovanni al Natisone 2017: Med.color w/ some bricking; fairly strong black pepper/peppery/Schio/spicy some earthy/dusty slight cedary/oldRed slight pencilly/oak bit complex nose; fairly tart/tangy/metallic some peppery/Schio/black pepper some dusty/earthy/loamy bit tired/metallic/cedary fairly smooth flavor w/ light bitey tannins; med.long some peppery/Schio/black pepper some earthy/dusty some tired/metallic/oldRed finish w/ light metallic tannins & bit of oxidation in the backtaste; showing signs of some age before its time; not a good example of Schio & overpriced at $42.00 (SFW&S)
________
3. Ronchi di Pietro Schioppettino Dd'OC: Friuli Colli Orientale (13%; L20; EnotecImprts/Boulder) Zorzettig Francsico & Fulvio/Cividale del Friuli 2016: Very dark/near black color w/ no bricking; strong Schio/peppery/black pepper/very spicy bit boysenberry/thyme/licorice some earthy/mineral classic Schio beautiful nose; fairly tart strong Schio/peppery/black pepper/very spicy/boysenberry/licorice bit pungent light earthy/dusty/OV fairly complex flavor w/ modest brisk tannins; very long/lingering bit tart/tangy strong black pepper/Schio/peppery very spicy/bit thyme/pungent boysenberry finish w/ modest tannins; can still use a few yrs but a wonderful example of a peppery Schio at a great price. $20.50 (KK)
_______________
A wee BloodyPulpit:
1. Schioppettino, also known as Ribolla Nera, is one of my favorite Friuli grapes. The Pietro was a beautiful example of that grape. I liked the Matthiasson as a pretty wine, but would liked a bit more ripeness & intensity. Schioppettino/Tazzalenghe/Terrano...all grapes they should be planting all up&down the Coast of Calif.

This is the issue I have with so many of the unusual (for lack of a better word) Matthiasson wines. They lack any guts. They seem to be trying to hard to achieve elegance, and forget flavor.
