WTN: Two New Solminer Reds '19...(short/boring)

by TomHill » Wed Mar 24, 2021 4:44 pm

Cracked these two new Solminers last night:
1. Solminer Blaufrankisch DeLandaVnyd/LosOlivosDist (12.1%; 6 brls; www.Solminer.com; U/U) Buellton 2019: Med.color; strong earthy/loamy/bit mushroomy black cherry cola/BlauFrankisc h/bit licorice/pungentlight pencilly/oak rather Burgenland/BF quite interesting nose; fairly tart/tangy rather earthy/loamy/Burgennland BF-like light pencilly/oak flavor w/ light tangy tannins; very long somewhat aerthy/loamy/mushroomy some black cherry cola/BF/bit licorice light pencilly/oak finish w/ lighttannins; pretty good resemblance to Burgenland BF but not quite as rich/lush as most & somewhat more lean/acidic; speaks strongly of BF; bit pricey at $46.00
_____________
2. Solminer St.Laurent RicciVnyd/Carneros (11.1%; 210 cs; U/U) 2019: Med.dark color; slight floral/black cherry/licorice bit earthy/Carneros PN-like light toasty/oak quite interesting nose; fairly tart/tangy some floral/Carneros PN-like/spicy light earthy light toasty/oak bit coarse/rough flavor w/ light tangy tannins; long some black cherry/PN-like bit tart/tangy light floral/black cherry/earthy light toasty/oak finish w/ light tannins; reminds more of Carneros PN than Burgenland St.L, which also shows some PN traits; quite an interesting red. $38.00

A wee BloodyPulpit:
1. Solminer is the wnry of Dave & Anna DeLaski in LosOlivos. The both started out in making wine in Austria & focus on making Austrian-style wines here in Calif. There whites (GV/Riesling) are varietally correct but I just wish they had a bit more oomph to them. Their skin-contact GV is excellent. Their reds (BF/St.L) are also quite varietally correct and probably my favorite of their wines. The Syrahs are on the light/anemic side and my least favorite wines.
But I applaud what they are doing here in Calif w/ an Austrian approach.
