Daniel Bocquenet is one of my favorite underdog Burgundy producers. His may not be a household name, but his wines are excellent and the man himself is as humourous, gritty and down-to-earth as one gets. He makes but three wines, each as distinct as the man behind them.
2004 Nuits-Saint-Georges 'Aux Saint Julien'
Black cherry, raspberry liqueur, anise, black olive, and cinnamon spice. Smooth, supple tannins and low acidity.
2005 Vosne-Romanee 'La Croix Blanche' (Barrel Sample)
A beastly spicecake of a wine. Cherry, and strawberry fruit, cranberry sauce, christmas spice, tar. Very Vosne.
2005 Nuits-Saint-Georges 'Aux Saint Julien' 2005 (Barrel Sample)
More strawberry and Black Cherry fruit, a wave of tart meatiness like blood sausage or marrow, sweet brown spice and agressive tannins. Delicious.
2005 Echezeaux Grand Cru (Barrel Sample)
Powerfully rich -Strawberry, rasberries, pommegranate. Supple mouthfeel. Rosepetal, tea leaves, smoke and leather.
Prost!
