WTN: Two Domestic Whites...(short/boring)

by TomHill » Wed Feb 24, 2021 5:46 pm

Tried these two back in KansasCity, prompting my grandson Caleb (a good Kansas plow-boy name if there ever was one) to ask me why I was always drinking wine:
1. gros ventre HighCountry White ElDorado (12.9%; 26% Arneis/22% GrenacheBlanc/20% Fiano/15% PicpoulBlanc/10% SauvBlanc/7% Vermentino; www.GrosVentreCellars.com) Windsor 2019: Light gold color; quite attractive floral/carnations/gardenias light stony/mineral bit spicy/nutmeg mostlt Arneis/floral nose; rather tart/tangy/crunchy/wirey light floral/Arneis/carnations/gardenias some rich slight metallic some stony/chalky/mineral lightly spicy quite interesting flavor; very long/lingering rather stony/mineral/chalky lightly floral/Arneis/carnations lovely crunchy finish; reminds mostly of Roero Arneis on the stony/mineral side but not quite as floral/aromatic as most; quite an attractive wine for the price. $22.00 (G/MT)

2. TeutonicWineCo Helvetii Viognier WillametteVlly/OR (11.67%) 2019: Pale gold color; attractive pear/Viog/bit floral/appley bit chalky/stony bit simple quite pleasant nose; quite tart bit citric/grapefruity some stony/chalky/mineral lightly floral/Viog/pear/apple rather quiet/restrained flavor; long light floral/Viog/pear/apple/peach bit herbal somewhat stony/chalky/mineral rather quiet/low-key finish; far away from DollyParton territory; a quiet/elegant expression of Viog but not at all lean or eviscerated; a pretty little Viog. $28.00 (HoundDog)

A wee BloodyPulpit:
1. gros ventre is the wnry of Sarah & Chris Pittenger. Chris used to be the winemaker at Skinner up in ElDorado and is now the winemaker at LimerickLane. This was the first of his wines I've had & now am eager to try more. It reminded me a bit of the EdmundsStJohn Heart of Gold but not quite as rich & aromatic. Not sure what vnyd the grapes came from but some very interesting varieties in this wine.
