2019 Bedrock Wine Co. Sauvignon Blanc Staves of Waidhofen - USA, California, Sonoma County, Sonoma Valley (2/13/2021)
I am well known as a Sauvignon Blanc hater, but I keep trying to have an open mind. I almost like this. The large wood vessel aging brings a bit of roundness, but it still has good freshness. There's melon and peach fruit notes that I find appealing. Then comes the yellow grapefruit sprinkled with chopped cilantro. I get past that, and there is a nice creamy note on the finish. Darned that grapefruit and cilantro! So close!

Ah, so you're a cilantro hater too! This starts to make sense. How do you feel about goat cheese?

I like goat cheese. I prefer sheep or cow, but I like goat.

Well, damn, two out of three. In my (limited) experience where one goes so go the other two. It's an enzyme thing--I've got one you don't, or something like that, which you probably know.

My issues with cilantro are not the normal “soap” type.

Since my recovery from the big accident in Argentina, I have a very acute sense when cilantro is involved. Except in very specific circumstances it sticks out like a sore thumb. When it’s in season at our local farm, I can smell it from literally a mile away.

That's very strange! But maybe not unlike the way, since having sinus surgery in September, I smell smoke. I mean, as one would hope, I smell more of everything now, but I smell fireplace smoke from two blocks away. Also pot. Lot of people smoke and drive, apparently, and I'll smell it when they pass me.

David, I can understand now why sauv blanc is a challenge for you. Helpful comments, Jenise.

I like cilantro & goat cheese. And, I have a bottle of the 2019 Staves, too. Along with 2 Compagni Portis. These were wish lists requests that were granted.

Given I purchased a total of 12 bottles last year, Bedrock is now on frugal soul's no-buy list. Said list is growing. Oops.

Given your frugal tendencies I would strongly recommend the Bedrock Rosé, Old Vine Zin and California Syrah. They are bargains.

Got 'em. And thanks!

2018 & 2019 OVZ, 2019 Ode to Lulu Rose', 2018 Syrah. Among others.
