WTN: Ridge Geyserville '17....(short/boring)

by TomHill » Sun Feb 07, 2021 4:20 pm

Tried this Fri night when I needed a good red:
1. Ridge Geyserville AlexVlly/SonomaCnty (14.5%; 68% Zin/18% Carignane/12% PetiteSirah/2% AlicanteBouschet; bttld Jan 2019; Drk: 8/18-8/33: EB) 2017: Dark color; very strong blackberry/spicy/Zin bit plummy/peppery some Ridge/vanilla/Am.oak some dusty/OV fairly complex classic Geyserville nose; rather tart/tangy strong blackberry/Zin/very spicy/plummy some earthy/dusty/OV some Ridge/Am.oak/vanilla somewhat hard/angular bit complex flavor w/ modest tangy tannins; very long/lingering rather tart/tangy strong blackberry/plummy/Zin/spicy some Am.oak/vanilla bit dusty/OV bit complex finish w/ some tangy/hard tannins; rather on the tangy/lean/strident side & not the rich/lush character I usually find in GV; a bit too hard/angular on the palate for my tastes; did not improve in the glass overnight & still remained hard/angular, maybe more so.

1. I tried this Geezer when it showed up on my Z-List shipment almost a yr ag. I liked it quite a lot. This btl was not that wine I had a yr ago. This was rather hard/angular/tangy on the palate & not the wine expected. It may be just going thru a phase/akward stage right now. Will try again in 6 months.

Hopefully just a weird phase or a weird bottle.

Very different from my experience with the same wine 3 weeks ago. Hopefully just an off bottle.

Tom, apologies for a tangential question...

Geyser and Geyserville

I understood geyser was pronounced gUYser in American. I'm sure that's how they pronounced the geyser we saw in Calistoga.
