2005 Bunnell Family Cellars Syrah Boushey-McPherson Vineyards - – this high altitude Yakima Syrah was opened as part of our planned study of spicy foods against wine – we have done several Southern Rhone matches which worked very well with kormas, vindaloos and tikka masala, mostly Vacqueyras and Gigondas, and wanted to sample syrah vs. Grenache to see what worked best. This one was served with a beef vindaloo, fairly spicy from arbol chilis.
The wine was well structured but had a giveaway as to origin – a big sweet berry nose and sweetness on palate signaled that the closest this had been to the Rhone was Washington State. Good acidity and now softened tannins (last time I tried a bottle was 5 years ago) and now on plateau as far as development goes and it seemed to lose some resolution with more time in the decanter. I’d say drink up.
