WTN: a light 2008 Burg

by Dale Williams » Thu Jan 28, 2021 11:27 am

Dinner was sausages roasted with mushrooms, bread, and arugula; wine was the 2008 Gerard Raphet Chambolle-Musigny. I like light and delicate, but this is approaching thin, Strawberry and red cherry, any tannin hiding, good acidity. Pleasant enough but not a lot of gas left in the tank. B-

Grade disclaimer: I'm a very easy grader, basically A is an excellent wine, B a good wine, C
drinkable. Anything below C means I wouldn't drink at a party where it was only choice.Furthermore, I offer no promises of objectivity, accuracy, and certainly not of consistency.

Well we can always recall the “wisdom” of Pierre Rovani, who said that almost all Burgundy is best consumed within 5-7 years of the vintage. ;)

That was my thinking on some 08s, but there are those who hold out faith, saying that more age will bring depth and bottle-sweetness. Obviously it depends on the specific wine. But nobody can know for sure how these wines will evolve.

I'm pretty bullish in general on 2008s. This one just left me cold, though it could be a phase. I have a few assorted Raphet 2005-2009, but unsure why- not a producer I follow/buy. Hopefully I like others more (or drink at a better point).

Rovani? Oh yes the 93 sucks, 97 is a great red Burg vintage guy.

Yes, each wine is different.
