1986 Rothschild

by Jeff Yeast » Fri Feb 16, 2007 11:06 am

Hi all,

I have recently acquired a bottle of 1986 Chateau Lafite Rothschild Bordeaux. How is this drinking now, and how much longer will it continue to improve with aging? Any comments on what I can expect from anyone who has tasted this are appreciated.

Thanks,

Jeff

It was my wine of the night at an '86 horizontal we had last year, pretty much all of the big boys except Mouton were represented.

1986 Lafite-Rothschild
High expectations, fullfilled. Very nice- big but balanced, lots of
graphite, cedar, and leather supported by dense sweet fruit. My WOTN,
and I think clear winner in voting. A

I think that was after a double-decant 6-8 hours before (I know that's what I did with Marguax for same event, and we aim at treatign the same). I'd stay it's entering it's mature window, but with tons of life ahead.

Was lucky enough to drink this mid last year. Our bottle was great and drinking pretty well now after a long decant, thought it would continue to develop upward over the next 8-10 years though.

I had it recently also at a tasting but, alas, my glass hadn't been washed properly - it smelled of detergent. But combining the taste from my glass (detergent didn't seem to affect that!!!) and smelling from my neighbour, it is a fantastic but very young wine. I seem to remember that a certain critic gave it very high points indeed. I don't normally see eye to eye with the critic, but here I do. Stunning wine. I would give it a decade before opening though. It is open now with decanting, but I think it has so much in reserve still that I would not open any if I had any.
