WTN: Inauguration Night- Special Club and Graves

Felt like Champagne, opened the 2014 Hervieux-Dumez Special Club. Round and friendly style, very apparent dosage, apple and lemon meringue pie. Decent Champagne, but not one to make joining the club a must. B/B-

Dinner was steak with truffle butter, roast potatoes, broccoli, and salad. Wine was the 1978 Domaine de Chevalier. Excellent showing- resolved tannins but still a sense of structure, cassis and black cherry fruit, tobacco, some light notes of humus/leaves/forest floor. Good length, nice wine. A-/B+

Grade disclaimer: I'm a very easy grader, basically A is an excellent wine, B a good wine, C
drinkable. Anything below C means I wouldn't drink at a party where it was only choice.Furthermore, I offer no promises of objectivity, accuracy, and certainly not of consistency.

We too felt the need for champagne. But also, all-American. So for a very American dinner of roast chicken with mashed potatoes and succotash, we started out with a Blue Mountain bubble from British Columbia that pretty much stuns me every time I taste it, a really really excellent wine by way of sympathy for our northern neighbors for whom putting up with Trump has been like living in the apartment over a meth lab, and followed that with a '16 William Selyem Rochioli Vineyard pinot which was very spicy and sweet, almost too much so, and about which I could not detect the structure for further aging.
My wine shopping and I have never had a problem. Just a perpetual race between the bankruptcy court and Hell.--Rogov
