An icon is going away - Ridge York Creek PS

by David M. Bueker » Wed Jan 20, 2021 4:40 pm

Saw in an email from Ridge today that the 2016 is the final vintage of the Ridge York Creek Petite Sirah. The vines have been grafted over to Cabernet.I have had maybe 30 vintages of that wine, including the amazing '71 and '74. Sad to see it go. Glad I grabbed a few bottles of the 2016 before I knew it was to be the last.

We are also fans of Petite Sirah. Have not had Ridge, but have had nothing but good experience with Ridge.

Recent PSs include Clavo Paso Robles, Four Vines Paso Robles, & Bodega Pierce Cochise County, AZ.

Turley PS Napa Valley, 2017 in cellar. Maybe that's as promising as the Ridge sounds.

Deep red cheers!

The Ridge wine is a legend. The 1971 is one of the ten best wines I have had in my life. The 1974 is in the top 20.

Why do they do this? Accountants in charge! The world doesn't need more Cab  .

Not so much accountants. York Creek is not owned by Ridge. The family that owns it makes Cabernet.

That's really sad. If I ranked my top PSs of all time, the leaderboard would be all Ridge York Creek.

Ditto. I’ve not had the ‘71 or ‘74 but the ‘78 and ‘79 were easily the best PS I’ve ever had. That said, my enjoyment of PS, even from Ridge, waned a little over the years. For my mileage, the real shame was when Ridge stopped making Cabs from York Creek, as those are probably my favorite cabs Ridge ever made.

Another ditto for Ridge YC--a '71 and later, a '91. 2nd place would be a 20 year old Behrens & Hitchcock.
