Trippin' Down Memory Lane: Klaus Matthes

by TomHill » Tue Jan 19, 2021 6:11 pm

Since I did the TN on Broc Cab Pfeffer, I've been racking my brain (I know... slim pickings there) to remember the name of the winemaker at Almaden/Charles LeFranc Cllrs. Amazingly, Google was of no help. Nothing...nada. Finally, I went to my library of books on Calif and dredged it up.
The winemaker was Klaus Matthes. Precious little of him out there on the Internet. I always thought you were immortal on the Internet... I plan to be.
The Almaden wines were pretty ho-hum (to be kind), but he made some pretty good wines under the Charles LeFranc label. Cab Pfeffer, Pinot StGeorge, late harvest Riesling, PinotNoir. This was in the late '70's when Almaden was bailing SanJose & planting heavily in the Pacienes of SanBenito Cnty. That huge vnyd is now owned by Diageo/Blossom Hill.
In the early '80's, Klaus left Almaden to be the winemaker in Georgia's (the State, not the country) first winery (Ch.Elan??), where he presumably died in obscurity.
Now you know the rest of the story.
