2013 Melsheimer Lentum Riesling
I opened a bottle last night and was not convinced. The nose was the best part. Reminded me of a minty precise white Burgundy. (I'm guessing the fermentation over several years in barrel contributed to that) But then the palate was sour riesling. Unfortunately, while both directions can be great, this bottle seemed to underperform on both dimensions. Not lively enough to be a convincing Mosel riesling. But not rich or deep enough to be a convincing white Burgundy-type wine.
But, definitely interesting. I guess the producer does not go for 'typical' expressions. I had no memory of it, but searching notes told me that I tasted through a lineup of Melsheimer wines 12+ years ago and found some great and some weird and less convincing. Probably need more detailed exposure to understand what's going on here. But not sure I'll get that!
