WT3Nights: Malleable Malbec?

by Pat G » Sun Dec 27, 2020 9:35 pm

Our Christmas Wine:
2009 LTU Malbec Uco Valley, Mendoza, Argentina

Purple fading to garnet then rose; rim variation less than age would indicate. Medium legs, clarity good with light sediment in the bottle. Aromas are black fruit dominant: black current and blackberry. There are hints of anise, licorice, maybe a touch of fennel. On the palate, spices/herb strengthen(s). By Day 2, the wine had softened rather than faded. More masculine Day 1, a bit toward feminine Day 2. And, on Day 2, distinct decline in clarity. Tannins are fruity. Medium finish, medium minus acidity. Day 3, aromas/flavors similar to prior days. Still that decent finish, too. Good choice for pairing with beef. Drink now or in 2021.

Sounds like a good beef wine.

I loved drinking Malbec while having grilled meats when I vacationed in Argentina.

Dave, good point. I used to find Argentinian malbecs routinely over-toasted in the oak department, something that from a distance seemed understandable since fire-grilled meats are so prevalent in the Argentine diet. Might be just the vagaries of what gets imported here these days, but recent versions I've had aren't nearly so toasted. Pat's doesn't seem to have been either.
My wine shopping and I have never had a problem. Just a perpetual race between the bankruptcy court and Hell.--Rogov

Not toasty. But it was 11 years old....

Had we tasted earlier, there might have been some toast/oak evident IMHO.
