WTN: Musar 1997

Musar 1997 is lovely. It must be about a decade since I've last tried this vintage. I do remember pretty large bottle variation even for Musar and this is one of the tamer ones. It has all the Musar goodies of proper funk and VA lift but neither in the extreme amounts that some bottles of this have had. Rich and sweet fruit, very warm year in style but with magnificent acidity and just the right touch of VA to keep it light and moreish. Lovely wine. I wish I could afford mature(ish) Musar more often.

I really should open a bottle sometime soon. I just never quite know what to have to eat with it.

I've never found Musars difficult on the table. Quite on the contrary, both red and white Musars seem to work with a huge range of dishes. Lamb (maybe with some herbal marinade?) is of course a classic pairing; if vegetarian, I've had great luck pairing it with all kinds of mushroom dishes.

I am sitting on a 2009 Musar, but I think it will be at least 5 years before I open it. Musar age slowly but at my age I think this Musar could last longer than I will!

We had a Musar red with lamb roast on Christmas eve. It was a 2001 Hochar. It was beautiful and paired very well with the lamb and comte scalloped potatoes.
